SANSÂGER Members Reunite To Revisit Their Cultural Heritage
November 3, 2010Twelve years after black metallers SANSÂGER called it a day, the three founders have once again come together to rerecord four of their original tracks with a view to releasing them in vinyl format.
Originally formed in 1997 on the Danish island of Bornholm by BLODARV frontman Hugin (vocals and ambience),Vale (ex-HOLMGANG) on guitar and Gaur (ex-VIGRID) on bass and drums, SANSÂGER was a project dedicated to keeping the folklore of Bornholm alive. With all three members having grown up on the island, which is steeped in the tales and myths of the thousand year old culture that ended with the death of Earl Blod Egil and the subsequent advent of Christianity, the band was concerned that Bornholm's past was slowly being forgotten, and chose the medium of music to pass on the old traditions.
SANSÂGER's first release, "Fortid", was recorded in November of 1997 and contained five tracks based on stories from Bornholm's past (or Burgundiaholm as it was originally known),and was released on Hugin's own label in December of the same year. "Fortid" became something of an underground success, touching, as it did, on themes that appealed to the psyche of black metal fans everywhere. However, before SANSÂGER was able to release any more material, the three members found themselves caught up with their other projects, and SANSÂGER was reluctantly laid to rest.
Commenting on the decision to revive the project, Hugin explained: "Basically, I'd finished work on the HammerArt Studios that I had been building on Bornholm, and it just happened that all three SANSÂGER members had some time on their hands and were all still emotionally attached to the concept, so we decided to take a fresh look at what we ha." The result was an EP consisting of two tracks from "Fortid" and two previously unreleased tracks, all of which have been specially rerecorded. According to Hugin, "They are very much tracks that lend themselves to being released on vinyl, both in sound and concept, so hopefully we can find a label that will be interested."
